Episode 24: Marc Theobald
On Episode 24 of Comedy Anatomy, Mike and Masavia chat with Marc Theobald. Marc is not only a great comic but also a very successful writer, and he’s done it all by staying true to his Brooklyn roots. He is currently a writer producer on Tracy Morgan’s The Last OG, and brings a different perspective to the game of comedy. In addition to writing and producing, Marc continues to perform as a standup comedian and is working on an upcoming tour with Tracy Morgan later this year.
Marc’s college days performing standup, subsequently working as a pharmaceutical sales rep, then deciding to come back to comedy after seeing Tracy Morgan on SNL, whom he started out with in the sketch comedy show Uptown Comedy Club (1992-1994).
After quitting the pharmaceutical gig, Marc went into full hustle mode: working colleges, hosting standup shows, running his own comedy rooms, then developing sketches for friend Dean Edwards while he was on SNL, later working with Tracy Morgan which led to co-writing three different specials for Tracy, and of course developing The Last OG.
Looking behind the scenes of SNL, and the competitive nature of the show.
Marc describes how he literally worked for free back in the day developing material for comedians, took writing classes at NYU, then ran over to the Boston Comedy Club to do a set. It was all about putting in the time, and having several irons in the fire all at once.
About The Last OG, and the inner workings of the writing room VS the set.
Originally from Brooklyn, Marc talks about how he managed to stay true to his roots and resisted moving to Los Angeles, opting instead to only travel to Hollywood when work required it.
