Episode 23: Rob Cantrell
In Episode 23 of Comedy Anatomy, Masavia and Mike chat with comedian Rob Cantrell. Rob was on the incredibly funny series The Last OG with Tracy Morgan on TBS, Comedy Central’s Colbert Report, HBO's Flight of The Conchords, Last Comic Standing, and more. He’s performed stand-up at SXSW, Bonnaroo, and The New York Comedy Festival, and has written on projects for Adult Swim, Vice and Comedy Central. Cantrell’s latest stand-up album (2018) titled Pure Uncut Joy, was recorded in Brooklyn, NY and is available on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen.
Rob’s early days growing up in a poor southern town in Virginia with a father who was a strong figure and very much into the arts, but sadly passed away in a car accident when he was 10.
How watching Eddie Murphy and Robin Williams, listening to Richard Pryor, and other early HBO comedy inspired Rob to go into stand-up.
How Rob went from a creative writing major to a sales job out of college, not really thinking about the future, but having fun with a great group of friends.
Comedy to Rob became a form of expression; there was something in him saying he could do bigger and better things by focusing on stand-up.
The art of being yourself, and the self-reflection involved in developing good comedy.
On having a work ethic and being creative - showing up, but also letting go of the need for fame and money, and just focusing on the work.
The ups and downs - having to get a catering gig in his ‘40s to pay the bills, nearly giving up on comedy, then finding himself on a private jet to open for Tracy Morgan.
Spirituality, meditation, and the benefits of focusing inwardly both as a form of therapy, but also to connect with your truth and essence.
And more!
