Episode 22: Marina Franklin
In Episode 22 of Comedy Anatomy, Mike and Masavia chat with Marina Franklin. Marina is a true veteran comic. Her onscreen credits include FX's documentary Hysterical, CW Presents One Hour Comedy Special: Single Black Female, HBO’s Crashing, the hit movie Trainwreck, Stephen Colbert’s Late Show, Conan O’Brien, Louie Season V, Comedy Central’s Chappelle’s Show, and more. FriendsLikeUs, her critically acclaimed podcast, is available on Apple podcasts or wherever you listen.
We chat about Marina’s early days as a theater kid who received a Masters in Theater from Syracuse University and pursued a professional acting career in NYC, ultimately trying her hand at standup and never looking back.
The grind of working a full time gig waiting tables, developing her act in clubs every night no matter how tired she was, and how she was finally able to focus exclusively on stand-up and make a good living.
The realities of working in a system where the 1% decides what’s funny, and coming to terms with the corporatization of comedy.
On showing respect for the craft of comedy and for the trailblazing comedians who came before you, as well as finding mentors and role models.
Her memories of legendary comic Patrice O’Neal, and coming up with her mentor Keith Robinson, and the likes of Big Jay Oakerson, Joe DeRosa, Bill Burr, and Rachel Feinstein.
Marina discusses how women in the industry are traditionally pitted against each other, and how the younger generation pushed back and started working more collaboratively.
How Marina develops her material on stage, finding the rhythm, and focusing on storytelling; the usefulness of recording and listening to her sets, and putting jokes on paper post-performance.
On winning her battle with breast cancer, performing while in treatment, and coming to a place where she could draw from that experience to create comedy.
And more!
