13. Royale Watkins

On lucky Episode 13 of Comedy Anatomy, Masavia and Mike chat with comedian Royale Watkins. Royale was on the very first, highly-revered Def Comedy Jam Tour. Aside from being a great stand-up, Royale does it all: He's an actor, writer, producer, and director. Most recently, he's been working as a writer and consulting producer for ABC's A Million Little Things, and he executive-produced and wrote All the Way Black for BET Plus, just to name a few.

  • We chat with Royale about the early days when he and a number of burgeoning comics chaperoned a very young Dave Chappelle to perform stand-up at the Boston Comedy Club, and other NYC venues.

  • Royale’s childhood in DC, his family life as one of 14 kids, and the moment he discovered the healing properties of laughter.

  • Early adulthood: from doing stand-up at 17 years old, to enlisting into the Marine Corps reserves, and being deployed to Iraq.

  • How, after serving overseas, Royale made the decision to devote himself fully to the art of comedy, which led to being featured on the very first Def Comedy Jam Tour, and what he learned from that experience.

  • The evolution of his career from Def Comedy, to starring in a TV Show, acting in films, then moving behind the camera as a writer, producer, and director.

  • On creating his own opportunities: building relationships the right way, and making his own path without relying on agents and managers.

  • And more!
