17. Dane Cook
On Episode 17 of Comedy Anatomy hosts Masavia Greer and Mike George chat with Dane Cook. Dane is one of the world's best-known comedians, having sold out arenas, published platinum comedy albums, and starred in numerous Hollywood films and TV series. Dane has appeared on Oprah, he's hosted Saturday Night Live, and continues to tour while also writing, directing, and producing. We explore his career, his ups and downs, and his outlook on life.
Dane talks about the early days growing up as the introverted kid of an alcoholic parent, and later, doing sketch and improv alongside the likes of Al DelBene, Robert Kelly and others, putting in the time to perform at coffee shops, Mexican restaurants, dingy rooms, and eventually, bigger and better clubs.
Dealing with phobias and insecurities, the tough times that followed his parents’ divorce, the realities of living with a hard-working single mom, and the sacrifices she had to make.
How coming up with comedians such as Bill Burr, Gary Gulman, Patrice O’Neal, and other heavy-hitters of comedy instilled a drive in him to work hard, dream big, and swing for the fences.
Dane discusses how he used physicality to conceal crippling anxiety, learned to work on his emotional issues, and came to the realization that humor can help you gain power over things that make you feel powerless.
On the advice he received from Robert Kelly and Patrice O’Neal that changed the way he approached comedy.
How the goal posts are always moving for Dane in regards to career.
And so much more!
