15. Neal Brennan

On Episode 15 of Comedy Anatomy, Masavia and Mike chat with a very special guest: comedian Neal Brennan. Neal is an Emmy-nominated writer, producer, director, and stand-up comic known for co-creating and co-writing the Comedy Central series Chappelle's Show with Dave Chappelle. In 2017, Neal released the one-hour stand-up special 3 Mics on Netflix to widespread critical acclaim. If you haven't seen it yet, you're missing out. Neal continues to perform stand-up regularly in the Los Angeles area and nationally.

  • The guys chat with Neal about his early days in the New York comedy scene, from attending NYU film school, to working the door at the Boston Comedy Club, and meeting Dave Chappelle.

  • Neal discusses his reluctance to dive into stand-up comedy, and his early preference for writing and working behind the scenes.

  • Working on Chappelle’s show, how sketches were written and developed, and some of the roadblocks they experienced with networks prior to, and even during, the show’s success.

  • Neal’s subsequent draft into entertainment’s big leagues, the disappointments that followed, and the huge success of 3 Mics (Netflix) and other projects.

  • How Neal designed the structure of 3 Mics so each part informs the other.

  • Looking back, how moments of close collaboration became the most cherished of his career.

  • Advice for young comedians, and more!
