His last stand-up special, The Great Depresh (HBO), was a massive success. The guys chat about Gary’s early days at the Boston Comedy Club, and how Gary’s mom would let him stay up late to watch his favorite comedians on Johnny Carson.
Gary’s comedic influences, including David Brenner and growing up watching comedians hosting daytime television game shows.
How, to their benefit, many great comedians have a tendency to remain somewhat childish through adulthood, taking pleasure in exploring little things that adults have grown out of.
Gary discusses feeling at his best in pursuit of a goal, and the fallacy of finally reaching happiness once that goal is attained.
His philosophies, including wanting to be the comedian that makes both the comics and the audiences laugh. Also, fully owning the joke, even when it’s not landing properly, and working at it until it does.
We chat about The Great Depresh, and what it meant to suffer from depression in the early days of his career when he avoided anyone having knowledge of his mental state, VS now that he’s been able to put it all on the table.
